Custody Movie The film falls flat both in terms of story and execution. Neither the action elements click nor there is entertainment in the second half to keep the audience engaged. It was said that every character in the film would have some significance, but the way Priyamani’s character is presented is disappointing.
The film stars Naga Chaitanya, Krithi Shetty, Arvind Swamy, Priyamani, R. Sarathkumar and Sampath Raj. It was shot simultaneously in Telugu and Tamil languages. Custody was released theatrically on 12 May 2023, where it received mixed reviews from critics and became a box office disappointment.
Custody Movie (2023)
In 2023, Venkat Prabhu, making his Telugu filmmaking debut, wrote and directed the action thriller Custody. Tamil and Telugu were used to film it simultaneously.
Plot
A. Shiva, a cheerful police officer, and his girlfriend Revathi, a driving teacher, decide to elope and get married in 1998. Shiva, however, becomes embroiled in a case involving road rage and detains Rajasekhar, also known as “Raju,” a notorious criminal who performs evil deeds for CM Dakshayani and her party. Shiva’s prisoner George informs him that he is a CBI officer who has 48 hours to bring Raju to court in Bangalore because Raju is knowledgeable about Dakshayani’s participation in a bombing that was planned at Morampudi to topple a state government controlled by a regional party. Shiva verifies the same over the phone with Varghese.
In the meantime, Dakshayani assigns some thugs and IG Nataraj to assassinate Raju after learning of his imprisonment. Goons belonging to Nataraj and Dakshyini attempt to assassinate Raju and George, but Shiva defeats them and escapes with them. Revathi joins them as they travel to Bangalore with Shiva, Raju, and George. Where their car plunges into a lake next to a dam, Nataraj finds them. George is murdered in a crossfire when Shiva, Raju, Revathi, and George sneak into the dam’s underground tunnel. Nataraj then attacks them. Shiva, Revathi, and Raju visit the hospital after escaping Nataraj because Raju was hurt in the previous shootout, but Nataraj’s men are keeping an eye on them.

Story:
Constable A small-town boy named Shiva (Naga Chaitanya) is madly in love with Revathi (Krithi Shetty). The girl’s parents are against their relationship. Shiva mistakenly detains gangster Raju (Arvind Swami) and CBI agent George (Sampath) one day. The CBI official informs Shiva that Raju must appear in court in Bengaluru. However, Raju is supported by the entire administration including CM Dakshyani (Priyamani). Shiva decides to present Raju in court and begins to struggle despite all odds. He is joined on his voyage by Revathi. Shiva tried, did he succeed? What difficulties did Shiva face in order to uphold the truth? The main plot point of the story is this.
Plus Points:
Naga Chaitanya does a good job of putting himself in the position of the underdog. He has worked very hard to seem skinny, and his acting is sincere. Chaitanya excelled in the action scenes and stands out in the brawl at the police station. His sincere acting strives to keep the movie together.
Arvind Swami is the ideal choice for the role of Raju, and a few of the scenes he has with Chaitanya and Krithi Shetty are enjoyable. His character’s comedic element causes a few chuckles. The charming actor still exudes charisma. Krithi Shetty is a good person, and she acts in accordance with expectations.
With their clever jabs and antics, Goparaju Ramana and Vennela Kishore thrill the audience. The first part of the movie begins out slowly, but as Arvind Swami’s character is introduced, the movie picks up speed and keeps it up till the halfway point.
Minus Points:
The movie is about the protagonist attempting to defend the antagonist, as Venkat Prabhu had previously disclosed. His biggest task was to craft an engaging storyline given this flimsy concept. Unfortunately, the second half is a major negative because the events are too dull and without any intensity.
Although the tale lacks substance, there were high hopes for Venkat Prabhu, who is renowned for his captivating screenplays. But after a while, one can start to wonder if Custody is really his film or not. One of Venkat Prabhu’s weakest works is custody. More focus was placed on the action component, although this had no impact on the movie, especially in the second hour.
The action doesn’t flow well, and there isn’t enough entertainment in the second half to keep viewers interested. Although it was promised that each character in the movie would be significant, Priyamani’s portrayal falls short of expectations. Sarath Kumar plays a role that is unfunny and has been done before. There is nothing particularly fascinating in the flashback section; it is just typical. The songs are yet another problematic aspect.
